After about two years of being a blogger, I have just recently known my niche. I bet you are surprised. Well, in the last two years I have not been blogging frequently, that is, I have been in and out of blogging. I guess you would want to know the reason, isn’t it?
Simple, I didn’t know my niche! And these literally caused a major blow in my writing skills which also affected the number of clicks on my blog and of course I was nowhere to be found on Google or Alexa PR… And stuffs related to being an Authority blogger.
We all know Linda Ikeji, don’t we? At least, some of you will, especially folks in Nigeria. Linda Ikeji stands as one of my many mentors and I have been following are closely in this past few months, but like a fool, I resolved on starting the exact thing she is into (more like an imposter), by changing the tagline of my blog in “Sam Adeyinka’s Blog”. Well, you know where stories like that end… Don’t you?

So let’s talk about knowing your niche……
As a newbie, you probably will be wondering what the word “Niche” means. I will disclose this to you in this article and it would be my greatest joy to see your two cent comments when you are done reading this masterpiece.
So what is a Niche?
Niche is defined by the Urban Dictionary as a position or activity that particularly suits somebody’s talents and personality or that somebody can make his or her own. Well, in my own term I define it simply as “uniqueness.”
See, from what I have garnered over the years, the 6.7Billion people on planet earth are created distinctively to serve different purpose which therefore means every one of us is original. I bet you don’t want to be an imposter!
Another word for niche, if you would ask me, is purpose. Generally speaking, your niche should be something you enjoy. Something you can’t go a day without talking about with your friends and families. In fact, your niche is your trademark
“Find what you most enjoy and you will never work a day”.
Why is it useful?
Niche is a very important element in the aspect of blogging. For instance, if in life you don’t know and understand your purpose, that is, the reason why you are here and the reason why you do what you do, it would be very hard for you to amount to anything in life. Like that, if you don’t know and understand your niche, that is, the area of your influence, it will be very difficult to be a successful blogger. So knowing your kind of niche is worthwhile as it helps you in understanding how to achieve your goals. It helps you to be focus.
“Far better it is to be known as one thing than to be known as the ‘whatever’ person”. – Sam Adeyinka
How to know your Niche
Before you start thinking of owning a blog you’ve got to first of all brainstorm and write down what your blog is about, your target audience, the mode in which you will reach and educate them and a host of other things, are what you must put into consideration.
At this point, you should get a sheet of paper because I will be asking you some questions, which I’d love for you to scribble down and answer when you are through reading this article.
Questions:
What are you passionate (enjoy) about?
What arouse you?
What motivates you?
What wakes you in the middle of the night?
What is that thing you know a lot about?
Try and identify the answers to these questions, they are your niche. And when you’re sure you have found your niche, be sure to know what you’re talking about because it will soon bring food to your table.
Example of Niche – Blogs – With a Difference
Emfastincome – is an avenue where you are taught on how to make money online, how to be productive and network with great bloggers that has gone ahead of you, and among many other topics that are related with being successful in the blogosphere. Emfastincome.com is owned by Enstine Muki.
AdrienneSmith – This blog is focus on helping people to have better blog, how to get traffic to their blogs and how to build relationships with their readers. AdrienneSmith.net is found by Adrienne Smith.
Aha-NOW – is a self-help blog. A blog for self-development and enrichment in life and family, it covers many different topics, ranging from blogging down to relationships. Aha!NOW is owned and managed by Harleena Singh. She also runs a blog which centers solely on freelance writers.
WriteClever – is a blog focused on the craft of writing and Susan (aka) Sue Neal teaches you how to turn your writing hobby into a goldmine. Amongst what she teaches on her blog WriteClever, are how to write quality content for SEO, how to write and publish your book, how to get writing jobs online, and etc pertaining to writing.
OneNaijaBlog – This blog is owned and managed by Momoh Babanature Yakubu, also known as “Babanature”. At his domain OneNaijaBlog he shares technological tips & tricks that help you in taking your blog a notch higher.
This people and many more authority bloggers enjoy blogging today as a result of knowing and understanding their various Niches. Niche involves being known for one thing. It is impossible to blog about everything. Truth is I have never seen a man who is good at everything. There is an adage that says “He who doesn’t stand for one thing will definitely fall for everything”.
Conclusively, finding your niche is not all that there is but pursuing it is what matters. Pursuing involves researching your topics and writing catchy titles & quality contents that will trigger attention. Also be sure to direct all your energies towards the working out of your blog’s niche and I bet the end result will be an endless success.
Thanks for the time.
Sam

Hey mate and namesake, I can see you’re really going viral, keep it up and thanks for the mention. I still remember I have some unfinished surgery to work on, I promise I’ll finish that buddy.
Now talking about finding a niche, this was the mistake I made in the lunch of my previous blog, well I won’t go far because the blog didn’t even last for a month, wanna know why? I went for a niche I know nothing about just because my mates are making it in the niche and of course, $$$ are included; the niche is definitely not my passion.
As a matter of fact, before I lunched viralwriter I spent months learning and reading tons of ebooks and blogs, this made me a problogger as a newbie blogger.
So I’ll advice those who want to make their first step in the blogosphere, take your time and study the niche you have passion for before hitting the gas. Love the quote you invented, now mine goes like this;
More bloggers fail through lack of purpose than lack of passion – Gilbert Samuel
Sam Adeyinka says
Hey sake,
awwwh….Thanks for thinking that way of me boss and fate holds to you. oh I’m sure you would.
Yeah…..many of us started blogging in a wrong niche and it’s fortunate that some of us realized early and quickly corrected it and started living happily ever after, while some tool many many years. Oh you are right, Gilbert, it takes passion and also learning before you lunch out by doing exactly what you did.
Thanks for this great advice bro, I’m sure they will of course follow the steps highlighted in the post and that of this your invaluable comment.
Ahha…..the quotes. That quote, my friend, is a product of inspiration. I’m glad you liked it and I love yours too, trust me.
Thanks sake, for stopping by. I really do appreciate.

Hey mate ,
After reading your post I think I am still confused with my niche 😉
I blog on various topics , sometime I write about Technology , blogging or even How To Guides..Isn’t that bad ??
Because I have heard that single niche are more successful and also ranked up in search results ?
So what you think I should do now ?
Sam Adeyinka says
Hey Pritam, my man! Sorry I’m late, ok!
Speaking bout your question, you are on the right part man. You know why? Cause it still boils down to Technology.
But you will have to put them in categories. You can see that on Gilbert’s blog, right? Even here!
So my friend, no hassle ok. Trust you’re doing fine. We will talk soon and have a good Sunday! 🙂

Hi Sam,
Thanks for the shout mate. Nice write up and detailed.
For me, niche is easy. Write something you have idea about … and write in extreme detail. Write nothing else expect for that specific niche.
Short and sweet 🙂
Nonetheless, well written and keep it up Sam!
Sam Adeyinka says
Hey bro Reggy, it’s nice to see you here at Theo’s blog. 🙂
Aha…you are well deserving of it and thanks for thinking it is a detailed post.
Yeah, because you are an expert. Most of us didn’t know about this until we met top guns like you. Writing a very detailed post is really important as it will help bring massive traffic to your blog (Newbies).
Thanks so much buddy for reading, commenting and as well as for sharing it with your friends. Have a great day ahead. 🙂

Hi Sam, and welcome to Theodore’s blog 🙂
Gosh! It IS surely a surprise to see you here with yet another guest post….I agree with Gilbert – you ARE going viral for sure – keep it up!
Thanks so much for the kind mention once again, I am indeed humbled to be mentioned here, though I know I had a tough time that time deciding upon the niche I wanted. Yes, because I was on a free Blogger platform when I’d started off, I was sure about the blog for freelance writers that I wanted, but this present one came alone when I realized that I had so much more to share other than just write about writing.
I’d say that having a single niche IS the best, but that also limits a writer and his/her creativity. There are many bloggers and writers I know who have thus made several blogs, each of a difference niche, but after a while when they realize it’s tough to cope and manage them all, they tend to shut those down. And I am with them, because blogging is NO easy task, as you must be getting to know too now 🙂
Speakign of myself, I started with a single niche blog pertaining to family and parenting initially, but with time, I knew I had lots more I could share that people started liking, once I started writing about it. Not to mention, the comments are proof enough of that, but you need to be careful where handling multi-niche blogs are concerned. You need to tap your audience and see what they are wanting to read, through the comments if possible – that’s how I started adding my niches. Also, it’s important to integrate one niche into another.
Yes, blogging was something I said why not start also, because of the number of questions bloggers use to ask me on the social media about how I blog – again, it was with an aim to help bloggers, and I think the maximum comments are on the 2 blogging posts I’ve written so far!! So, it works if you are focused and determined with what you can handle and carry forward.
Thanks for sharing. Have a nice day, both of you 🙂
Sam Adeyinka says
Hey Queen Harleena, I am so sorry I’m late. I’ve been having issues offline and trust me they needed critical attention. I’m solving them one after the other though. 🙂
Aha……….I am so blushing here ma’am. Haha 🙂
You are so right ma’am, blogging is not easy at all. I used to think it was but ever since I got into the game, my perception about it has since changed. I wouldn’t have known my niche if it weren’t for those mention fellas and of course you, Harleena and those of other bloggers I gave mentions. Ma, trust me I have read far and wide. I don’t usually leave comment though but I found out about it’s important though.
having single niche of course limit our creativity and I think the best way to solve that is through putting your blog posts in categories. I’m I right? If I’m not wrong, you have so far posted about three blogging tips on your weblog.
I can’t continue than to stop and acknowledge the fact that you have covered everything up in this lovely comment of yours. I’m sure the readers will find your comment really useful.
Thanks for stopping by and for leaving this valuable comment, Harleena. I’m so grateful – you should also have a good one. 🙂

Hello sam, i found my niche the moment i started blogging, but i used to copy content instead of creating my own. Continued this for like 5 months (i think in 2011) and ultimately i found at the big mistake i made and the time i’ve wasted. It’s just because of my ignorance at that time. But now i;m posting my own content and i’m proud myself about that. And sam this is the main thing every newbie blogger’s doing now a days apart from knowing their own niche. Anyway there are also many multi niche blogs out there . Convey my regards to Sam Gilbert and Shehu Awwal, Babanature Yakubu , Reginald Chan and also Obasi Miracle. Reginald also helps me a lot. So the conclusion in my view i think writning your own content based on your own idea is more important tahn concentrating on a niche. NO hard feelings bro. Hope you understand. Apart from all these thanks for sharing this article with all of us. Nice idea though. Useful for beginners. Ok then see you soon bro. have good day. Sorry if i’m boring. 🙂

Awwwh………….I sure will do that and they’d be glad you say hi. Oh Reginald! He is such an awesome guy. He’s helped me a lot and without him, I don’t know what my life has a blogger would have been. I’ve just interviewed him on my blog though…You should check it out. Less I forget..Even you my friend has been so helpful and has helped my blog to where it now is.
Boring? Nah! Far from it, you where awesome and thanks for the extra value you’ve now added to this post. I’m also glad you came. Do have a fantastic day ahead! 🙂

Hi sam
The first i observe is that you are going viral.
I just discovered my niche last year after two years of copying and pasting. when I found my niche, it wasn’t hard to come up with a blog topic to write on.
I will rephrase Gilbert’s quote
“Those who are driven by vision and passion last longer than those who are driven by survival ($$$) “
Sam Adeyinka says
Hey Abraham, and welcome here on Theo’s blog – it sure is nice to see you here. 🙂
Discovering one’s niche is highly essential when it comes to blogging, just like discovering one’s purpose is to succeeding in life. I guess I mentioned this in the body of the post, right? And I think you are right about what you said that it helps in writing blog posts. That’s absolutely true bro.
Those are really impressive posts, especially yours. nice one!
Aha….Thanks for your kind words bro, I really appreciate – do have fun-filled day. 🙂

You are dead right about what you said bout Niche and truth is without it no blogger has ever thrive. It’s a major part of blogging. And yeah, you can’t churn out good contents without it. You will just look like a joke.
Thanks for stopping by here, mate. I do appreciate and gratitude for this lovely comment too.

Hi sam, good to see you here again on bro Theodore’s blog.
I was shocked after reading your starting paragraphs on hearing that it took you about two full years to discover that you have been threading on the wrong part really.
Funny enough may bloggers haven’t discovered their niche even after blogging for 5 whooping years, this is visible from 10years old unsuccessful bloggers that still relies heavily on stolen contents to populate their blog.
Many of them will post every piece found on the internet making even their loyal readers to lost their part even from the homepage.
This is one of the reasons we keep advising young bloggers to try reading at least a bit far and wild from the other bloggers that are related to their niche or in most cases ask question on things they find confusing.
I also enjoyed the other parts of your tips. thanks for sharing and do have a great day ahead of you bro,
Sam Adeyinka says
Hey Sir Obasi, thanks for the welcome.
Yeah….solid two years before i knew my niche and trust me the feeling was so exhiliarating. 🙂
You mean to tell me sir, that even 10 years old blog do still contents too? They are really a joke. Well, you are right about asking question from those that have gone ahead. It could also be a better way of finding ones niche.
Thanks for coming and for leaving this invaluable comment on here. Its much appreciated sir.
Have a blessed Monday! 🙂

Hello Sam and welcome to Theodore’s blog, this is indeed one nice topic for all new bloggers to tap from 🙂
You know – knowing your niche is very important, but as funny as it is, i never choose the niche i am in now, it just happened naturally because of the love i have for technology. I did everything, but what i did not do was planned my blog – i just released it and start posting :). But what actually did helped me was what i had which is my niche.
My bottom line here is, without picking a niche for your self, you’ll be off the radar :). Thanks for the mention Sam, it was appreciated…

Hey Baba,
Are you kiding me sir? Well, I know you are a genius.

Hi Sam: Congratulations! Thumbs up for the news and much success! Great comments in your article. For sure there is much more for “niche development” you will bring us and share, since you are on the way. People may walk years around discovering their niche, when they are really part of it. This is the “key” to open the door, still it takes time and a process as you well know! This is why my program “The missing Link to your wealthy worthy life” helps see what one is unable to see. I have to say the topic you choosed to write about this time is one of my passions. You wanted me to be here and this is why I came to share. People have to integrate their Purpose, Vision, Mission and Passion to live their best life ever and it is then that work will be called a different “name” . Keep inspiring the world Sam!!!

Great article sam, i believed in every way one or two persons will have lots of things to say and which i’m fortunate to one of them. i’ve suffered a lots with blogging, you know what i mean… subscribing my modem without the faith that there would be income from adsense, media.net or affiliated whatever. I believed i was in the wrong ground when i started blogging in 2011, i had an entertainment blog, but find it very difficult to flow with stuffs that i’m made off/ thank God that i found my niche… and to the newbies, it’s a very important thing to create your niche where your passion lies or else, you will be short of ideas in the long run. Thanks for the wonderful article.
Sam Adeyinka says
Hey Asaolu,
Of course bro, we all have something to say which I totally feel should be shared with the world. You know the most funniest part of it? Everyone will love to here if you present it to them as an expert. That’s why we stressed that you should know your niche.
I sure share your fate bro and I know what that means through and through.
I seriously I’m glad to find you here bro, thanks for this eye opener you have just shared with our readers. You are the best, bro – and have a fantastic day ahead. 🙂

Hi Sam,
Great tips on how to know your niche. I think it’s extremely important to have some idea of what niche you are going to enter before you start a blog.
The last thing you want to do is start a blog and then later on find out that you have no interest in the niche. Great tips that will definitely help anyone who is getting ready to start a blog.

Hey Susan,

Susan Neal says
Hi Sam,
Congratulations on another great guest post, and many thanks for mentioning my blog!
I think you raise really important point in this article – your blog’s success really depends, to a large extent, on becoming a ‘go to’ authority in your niche. I don’t think that means you necessarily need to be an expert when you start out – in fact there are still many aspects of my own niche in which I know I have a lot to learn – but you at least need to have the motivation and desire to BECOME an expert, by immersing yourself in the niche and developing your knowledge and skills.
It does help to be passionate about your niche, but that’s not enough on its own. I think you need to make sure your passion is something that plenty of other people are going to be interested in – otherwise you’ll have a lonely old time!
Choosing the right niche is a crucial decision for any blogger and you’ve given newbies some great tips in this post – cheers, Sam, and many thanks, once again, for the mention 🙂
Sam Adeyinka says
Hey Queen Sue,
Thanks for the congrats ma’am and oh yeah..I’m so glad I did. 🙂
Oh my my, you are so right ma’am, that you know your niche those not guarantee you to be a success. Success will only come, if and if only you are willing to immerse yourself in that your chosen niche.
Oh my my, this another one I love. Is important of course to have passion but your passion should not solely focus on you but also your readers, cause it’s not even because of you but them. “It’s never about you, but your readers who are potential clients.”
Thanks for thinking it’s a great post. I’m so glad you liked it. You are the best, Susan!
have a great day ahead. 🙂

Hi Sam,
Congrats on another fantastic guest post!
I absolutely agree that your chosen niche should be something you enjoy doing. It just makes it that much more pleasant to put in all the work that is required (which is a LOT) when you really like what you do. This is why it’s good to do some serious brainstorming before you get going, so that you don’t waste your time on something you realise you don’t actually enjoy all that much.
Thank you for this article, I think this is incredibly useful for any newbies and indeed anyone who has started on the wrong foot and are now looking for a better way of doing things for themselves.

Hey Sam,
What a pleasant surprise to see you here at Theodore’s place again. Aren’t you becoming quite the guest blogger my friend. Well good for you and what a great topic to share.
When I started I jumped into a very over saturated niche, affiliate marketing. Very hard to stand out from the rest but I did okay. I just wrote about affiliate marketing and promoted courses or products that could help people go further in that area. It worked out okay but I didn’t make a ton of money doing it. I’ll tell you one thing for sure, I was not passionate about it. I just did it because I couldn’t think of anything else to do. Not very smart I admit.
I didn’t stick with it the entire time as you very well know by now. I was so bored writing about it that I started writing about other things I was running across, programs that helped me or something I’d just learned how to do with my blog. One thing led to another and the next thing you know people are interested in what I had to share. I honestly can say that I love what I do now.
Thank you so much for the kind mention, another very pleasant surprise. I think we’re all perfect examples of finding ourselves online too. Finding what we enjoy doing and just going for it. Being consistent in our actions will really take you places.
I just hope that everyone can find what they enjoy doing and with the help of other bloggers they’ll all find their place here soon enough.
Thanks again and you two have a really great week okay!

Waoo.. What a great blog with great content Sam.
You have done a good Job taking your time to put up this.
You see one thing about Niche is that it helps you rank in a very short time. (had the experience with one of my Amazon and Microsoft Niche blogs).
Since starting a new blog now and ranking it requires more efforts unlike before, pitching and mastering One topic with at most 20 to 50 Keywords in general for the blog is highly recommended for the newbies.
And for the Pros, I don’t think starting a new blog is necessary, instead, start a new subdoman is your main blog. That is exactly what I did in Techliet and it’s working for me.
once again, nice work.
